What's the point?

Spanky (198.200.160.45)

Thanks, spanky, for a whole lot of nothing.

Benjamin Bueford Blue a.k.a. Bubba :) kameron@pioneer-net.efn.org: What's Up! I found this page on Yahoo! Check out my page at www.geocities.com/athens/3497

Thanks. Its still listed in Yahoo. Unfortunately, your page was lost to history.

Richard Jones (rcjones@students.wisc.edu): Hi! There how are you?

I'm good. How is Wisconsin?

John Doe (slip057.loa.com): Hi! what's up just surfing the net and came across this link about printing. Hey what's the point in doing this? Is it to be different or the first one to do something for nothing but proving it can be done. I don't know but gotta go. Later on email me at BRIDAV@LOA.COM

Why not do it? Back in 1995, it was a neat good way to meet random people on teh Internets, you know, before they were all filled with scary people.

February 02, 1996

Yoda II

Yoda (198.242.71.29): Eric: my second message to yer printer :) do you really read these? Yoda

Yoda's first message is here. Yes, I actually do read them...

February 03, 1996

Randy

Quiet day, only one message.

Randy (rkraus@icarus.cc.uic.edu): Hi! Have a nice day.

You too.

February 04, 1996

Venis the Blob

NecroBones (NecroBones@umbc.edu): Greetings... what's up? What sort of connection to the net are you using? Just curious...

Not much. The oldest incarnations of yikes were connected to the Internet through a dual-channel ISDN link.

Venis the Blob (dphess@mailbox.syr.edu): Howdy! Just a quick selfless plug... visit Venis the Blob's REBUS Home Page!!! http://web.syr.edu/~dphess Thank you for letting me get that out of my system. I feel much better, now.

Dan Hess's old Venis the Blob pages are accessible, courtesy of the Internet Archive. A quick Google search finds Venis' new home at venisproductions.com.

Nothing

Sorry, there were no messages today. I feel so unloved.

Geniuses

Proof Caltech students aren't all that they are made out to be:

NHGH (nheeghee.caltech.edu): dat's na beige. Doo doo deet? Hog hong doodle. Saddam goat. boom boom ba cholkie, ord'ya give 'em throught? And don't forget to monster's peen before you wee-da-oa-been!

... followed by an enemy of the environment:

Jermey Butchart (jeremy@ida.net): Well lets see how much paper we can waste .

You
can
waste
a
lot
if
you
try
.

Ero the Hero (olaoskar@netg.se): RVVUUUUN!!!! Rvvuun is a fun club wich you can get more information about if you write to my address olaoskar@netg.se Rvvuun

I will consider joining... thanks.

Jon Rosenson (jon@diskriter.com): Hi! This is nice.

otter.labs.cis.pitt.edu is a lovely hostname. I know at least one otter-lover...

February 07, 1996

Randolf Westphal

This whole week has been slow... once again, only a single message.

Randolf Westphal (babaji@berlin.snafu.de): Hello Eric ! Really great what you did... ;) I was here to find more about netscape and there are good informations. Thank you! I will make a link at your site because it is really nice. Good bye! Randolf (Berlin/Germany)

Yet another fan of the deceased Netscape Tricks page. Perhaps I should bring it back to life, now that no one uses Netscape anymore.

Looks like Randolf has a web page with berlin.snafu.de. Based on the project links, I am guessing that randolf-westphal.de is same person.

February 08, 1996

Netscape OJ

O.J. Simpson (oj@well.com): I did it! It confess! She asked for it

Oh great, another O.J. Simpson impersonator. Hey, O.J., your "friend" left a message last month.

Tim W: I am here at netscape, taking a class. Its kind of lame at the moment so .... I thought I'd kill an tree and print to your print. tim@pobox.com

Amazing, everyone else in the world is using Netscape 2.0, except Netscape themselves. No wonder the training sucked.

February 09, 1996

Strange Italians

Antonello (mc8526@mclink.it): Congratulations, this is the strangest thing I encontered on the web to date. Ciao, Antonello

Perhaps I'm the weird one, but I hardly think a printer hooked up to the Internet is the strangest thing on the web.

February 10, 1996

Garbage

wachoff@hugh.jass.com (admin.winthrop.edu): Hi! Is this one hell of a waste of time!!! Im not using any tags. I just want to waste some paper if thats what this thingy does... And now I dont want to listen to your begging for more printer ribbons, so why do you still have this thing. after a while youll get millions of messages and sguff, what a waste fo paper. wahat do you do with it all? after its printed out

Quite a mouth full, I only have one thing to add: I don't recall ever asking for ribbons.

Hi There Hi There

I was obviously testing something, but obviously it was not as much fun as the following, which looks like the results of random garbage being sent out the serial port:

lots of garbage characters printed on a page...

February 11, 1996

Andrew Wheeland

Only one message...

Andrew Wheeland: Hey there, Eric! This is pretty exciting stuff!

Indeed it is!

February 12, 1996

More Bill of Rights

Bob Pagani: Call the Bill of Rights Hotline right NOW! How ELSE are you gonna have a sexy young woman read you your rights? ... The Hotline is 1-900-868-2707 and costs $1.98 per minute. Do not call if you are under 18, though.

Bob, you have already spammed me with regards to the Bill of Rights Hotline. [ You can find a recording of the hotline on The Cranky Media Guy's media page. ]

The other message is from a shy type at Apple:

John Doe (a17_128_201_119.apple.com): Hello there.

February 13, 1996

Andy Lee

Andy A. Lee sent several messages with long lines, unfortunately, they wrapped without a newline. If you look closely, you can make out most of the overlapped words...

Andy A. Lee: My name is Andy ... Since you registered

Sorry Andy, I'm still using yikes.com, and will keep using it. I do like your web browser, OmniWeb/2.0-beta-3b OWF/1.0, few people have used NeXTSTEP.

User In Need of Life

Another message from IBM's Almaden Research Center. At least s/he's more verbose today...

User In Need of Life (ntp.almaden.ibm.com): Hello there to all those people who seriously need a LIFE!. Have a Nice Day.

February 14, 1996

Valentine's Day Without the Valentines

First, a bad joke from a John Doe...

John Doe (193.31.178..49): What have light-beer and making love in a canu have in common? Both is close to water.

Next, and ad for the Night City BBS:

John Doe (bne1.dtv.net): This is a postcard from: NIGHT CITY BBS On the Gold Coast, Queensland Australia. +61-7-55-767308

Ted Fortner: Twinkies have a four day shelf life. If they aren't sold in 4 days, they're thrown away. See there, they don't have the shelf life of gravel. (8

I strongly doubt that Twinkies only have a four day shelf life.

Tad Donaghe (tad@intersurf.com): ??? This was sure fun.

Sorry Tad, the printer ate half of your message.

February 15, 1996

Null

No messages for today. That is not an authoritative statement that there are none, just that I can't find any...

February 16, 1996

Just John Doe

John Doe (usr3-210.frontiernet.net): Hello there.

*yawn*

February 17, 1996

John Doe Land

Today's messages are coming in two batches, split by author, not time. This is part one, everyone who was too shy to provide their name.

p91.superlink.net: this is massively f.u. dude, maui20.maui.net: staggo, Captiva99@aol.com: Is everyone having fun on this Saturday morning?, ddh.bart.nl: Hello there. Greetings to all!

At least they had something to say... The next three John Does were mutes:

cs1-05.eph.ptd.net: Hello there, abel-nberggren.unl.edu: Hello there, maui27.maui.net: Hello there

brnjones, Nifty Bob, and Kris Dahl

brnjones@cts.com (brnjones.cts.com): i bet everyone writes either hello world! or does this work! or any other variations

Yes, you are correct. Most people say hello world! (it is the default message), or doubt the functionality of my printer.

Bob (xyplex5-3-11.ucs.indiana.edu): Hey! What's up? I'm Really NIFTY. Does this thing work? If it does then Eric--BOB IS NIFTY TO THE MAX! Bye-bye! Gotta go. **~~GONE~~** (repeated 3 times...)

Wow, Bob, you certainly are NIFTY, but I don't think you really needed to tell me that three times in a row.

Kris Dah (chaos@nas.com): My friend John is trying to get me to use WebStar as opposed to another server on Windows NT. He says (I quote), '...no...no... kris... Check out yikes.com... It is running on a MAC II! with system 7.5... Just like any other server, and it is still fast enough.' So here I am... checking it out. Pretty cool. What knid of connection do you have, and how many hits can this here server take? Thanks, Kris

You are probably the first people to consider a Macintosh II fast enough! On such old hardware, each CGI takes over two seconds to execute, mostly due to the overhead in sending an AppleEvent. The record number of hits served from that incarnation of Yikes was over approximately 30,000, with over half the hits coming from Japan.

February 18, 1996

Trolls and more

Timo provided the first message of the day:

Timo A. (tahonen@sci.fi): I would like to send greetings to my mother. Hi mam, do you see? Timo is in this printer!

Next, the anonymous visitor from Sweden asks the all important question...

somewhere@in.space: Hi there, have U nothing better to do?? :))

No, apparently not. At least he said more than the next two visitors, from sbc.com and earthlink.net:

John Does (msi_user_248091.corp.sbc.com and max1-so-ca-33.earthlink.net): Hello there.

max1-so-ca-33.earthlink.net: try http://www.earthlink.net/~dafuture Live pitcures of the WestValley in CA!

Sorry, the link no longer appears to work...

dsrvmon1-3.linknet.net: You had wild sex with another man in a hot tub of bbq sauce... you lick testacle warts you cheesey goat ropin son of a peanut headed mother fucker

Wow... The trolls were active, and roaming the 'Net, back in 1996. At least the next troll had some etiquette:

Lickum D'se Nutz (root@ferret.com from lanier.mindspring.com): Wasting paper again? Wasting paper again? Wasting paper again? (repeat many times)

John Doe (elsinore.cis.yale.edu): Hello there

I hope not everyone at Yale is as shy as you are.

February 19, 1996

Seppo Syrjaneb (Seppo.Syrjanen@helsinki.fi: Hello there. Pretty nice thing, this printer gateway!

I agree.

quimby.ustores.missouri.edu: Hello there. you pud wacker

pud wacker (n): A dislikeable person; a jerk. (Literally, a masturbating male.)

Hello, I am Steven Eppler

Steven Eppler (ltcmworf1@aol.com): Hello, please e-mail me ASAP!!! I think the printer is pretty old, though.

OK!!!

knodom@sover.net: Hello there. Eric- I need a driver for an Imagewriter II. Where can I find it, or can you send it to me .sit.hqx? I been to UMICH and others, but the usual list of suspects have failed me. CheersK

Sorry, I was sending text directly to the serial port. The driver was included in the MacOS for a very long time, easily until OS 9, and was available as a separate download.

Not shown is a blank message from www-12-222.gnn.com using Mozilla/2.0b3 (Win16; I). The only interesting thing about the next message is the host, thinkbank.com, located in Berkeley, not far from where this printer was located at the time.

John Doe (thinkbank.com): Hello there

February 21, 1996

Thanks, I always like earning an A, however, I must ask, why did I not earn an A+?

Ah, the day would not be complete with at least one troll. The lovely "Meoff, Jack" sent the following troll infested message:

Not shown are is John Doe from tar151.why.net who had as little to say as John Doe from 206.148.240.8, nothing.

February 24, 1996

The John Does not shown came from 205.199.198.198 and copeland.qualcomm.com.

Valerie Kolko (i062652@village.ios.com): Whats up? As a junior in HS who still cant get this hypertext thing yet, Im pretty impressed with your server... Could always use new people to write, and by your pages, you seem like a nice Jewish kid. Not many kids out here are into the Net thing anyway...

By my math, Valerie Kolko is one year older than I. She seemed to have some fun with the back and submit buttons...

And, the final message on this leap day came from Internet Alaska Support:

Internet alaska Support (support@alaska.net): There once was a man named Paul who went to a masquerade ball he decided to risk it and go as a biscuit but a dog ate him up in the hall

Not shown was today's John Doe from server1.asua.arizona.edu.
